Postdoctoral Research Fellow

This new full-time post is available from 1 September 2024 until 31 August 2027 on a fixed term basis, subject to funding.

The post

The Faculty is delighted to welcome applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to be a key part of the GlycoCellUKRI Engineering Biology Mission Hub. This is an exceptional opportunity to do exciting, high-impact research as part of the UK's flagship new initiative and large investment in transformative Engineering Biology. GlycoCell is applying synthetic biology approaches with glycoscience to develop vaccines, therapeutics and diagnostics dedicated to glycan biomanufacturing (www.ukri.org/news/new-100m-fund-will-unlock-the-potential-of-engineering-biology). GlycoCell is a collaborative, multidisciplinary consortium spanning six UK academic institutions and three industrial partners which will interact extensively as part of the research programmes. This is an excellent career and professional network development opportunity for the successful candidate.

This UKRI funded post is available from 1 September 2024 for three years in the first instance. The successful applicant will work with the Hub core team to design and test gene libraries for glycan production and validate the glycans produced and proteins that produce them. The post will include design gene networks to produce glycans, develop detection methods for glycan intermediates, prepare proteins for glycan detection and functional validation, and screen libraries for optimal glycan production. The successful candidates will be part of a large team of Research Associates/Fellows, PhD students, technical specialists, and academics with real capacity to deliver on ambitious objectives leading to excellent outputs and impacts, and the opportunity to support and mentor more junior researchers. We intend to develop future leaders in our field here.

About you

The successful applicant will be able to develop research objectives, projects and proposals; train junior scientists in techniques and laboratory practices; identify sources of research funding and contribute to the process of securing funds; and make presentations at conferences and other events.

Applicants will possess a relevant PhD or equivalent qualification/experience in a related field of study. The successful applicant will be a nationally recognised authority in Biochemistry and possess sufficient specialist knowledge in the discipline to develop research programmes and methodologies. The successful applicant will also be able to work collaboratively, supervise the work of others and act as team leader as required. Applicants will have demonstrated skills in at least two of polysaccharide biochemistry, synthetic/engineering biology, mass spectrometry, protein production, and tissue culture.
