Research Associate (Postdoc) on Functional Forest Ecology under Climate Change

Your responsibilities

Duties include teaching and research in the respective department or institute. Research associates may also pursue independent research and further academic qualifications as well as acquire teaching experience. These duties are intended to promote academic achievement. Therefore, at least one-third of set working hours will be made available for the associate’s own academic work.

The offered position will complement current research foci of the chair by developing a strong research agenda on the functional ecology of temperate, tropical or boreal trees and forests under climate change. The successful candidate will focus on one or more of the following areas: Ecophysiology, dendrochronology, experimental plant ecology, climate impact research. Critical challenges for forests under climate change will be addressed, e.g. by exploring the interaction between tree functional traits and biogeochemical cycles. Collaboration in ongoing research projects of the chair is desired, the acquisition of own third-party funding is expected. Specific Duties of the Position:

Support coordination of research projects of the professorship of Functional Forest Ecology.

explore the role of functional groups (e.g. hydraulic strategy types, mycorrhizal association types, or others) in biogeochemical cycling;

develop a complementary, innovative research agenda with respect to forest responses to climate change;

teach at the bachelor and master level (4 teaching hours p/w);

support the acquisition of third-party funds through competitive research proposals;

write and publish high quality scientific papers in leading peer-reviewed journals;

present results at national and international conferences.

Your profile

A university degree in a relevant field, plus doctorate.

Relevant fields, in which a very good university degree should have been achieved, are for example Biology, Environmental Sciences, or Geosciences.

Strong skills in ecophysiology, dendrochronology, experimental plant ecology, and/or climate impact research are a plus. Team-orientation and interest in conducting interdisciplinary research as well as being proactive are a must. Willingness for field work and research stays abroad. Excellent English communication skills (spoken and written) are required. Excellent German communication skills (spoken and written) are a plus.
