MRC Postdoctoral Research Scientist (Metabolism and Cell Growth)

A 3-year postdoctoral position is available in the Metabolism and Cell Growth group headed by Dr Susumu Hirabayashi (https://lms.mrc.ac.uk/research-group/metabolism-cell-growth/), at the MRC London Institute of Medical Sciences (LMS) based on the Hammersmith Hospital Campus of Imperial College London. The group uses the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster as a model system to study the systemic interplay between whole-animal metabolism and tumour growth. Current research interests in the lab include exploration of the molecular link between diet-induced obesity, tumour growth, and cachexia-like peripheral organ wasting. Our studies are underpinned by multidisciplinary approaches combining fly genetics, imaging, molecular and protein biology approaches, and high-throughput sequencing. The successful candidate must hold a PhD in a relevant biomedical discipline and have a strong interest in metabolism and/or cancer biology. Extensive experience in fly genetics and molecular biology techniques are essential. The successful candidate should have excellent verbal and written communication skills, a strong work ethic, meticulous record keeping, and, in addition, develop and carry out his/her own line of research within the group’s areas of interest.

This is an MRC Postdoctoral Research Scientist position providing training and development supporting post-doctoral scientists in early or changed career paths helping establish them as successful research scientists in their chosen field. *Salary quoted is inclusive of London weighting. Additional allowances comprise a £1,000 lump sum Settlement Allowance plus a yearly Training Allowance of £850 in the first year, paid in monthly instalments. The Training Allowance increases to £1,300 in year two, and £1,800 in the third year.

This role qualifies for endorsement by UKRI for a UK Global Talent Visa, for which the successful applicant is likely to be eligible to apply. Immigration costs for applicant (100% visa and 100% Health Surcharge) and immediate dependents (100% visa and 50% health surcharge when applying with main applicant) can be reclaimed from LMS after taking up the post (terms and conditions apply).
